STUDY SKILL INVENTORY AMONG HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS


INTRODUCTION
  Study skills are the approaches and strategies, we use in learning. There are the most important skills to get good grades. They are generally critical to succession of school considering essential for acquiring good grades and useful for learning throughout one’s life. Study skills are an array of skills when tackle the process of organizing and taking in new information retaining or dealing with assessment. They include mnemonics, which aid the retention of list of information effective reading concentration techniques and efficient note taking.
While often left up to the students and their support network, study skills are increasingly taught in high and at the university level contrary to popular benefits studying is also a compound ward made up of the two words students and dying (Stu-dying).
Study habit inventories have successfully identified a proclivity for academic achievement not accounted for by ability. These inventories may be identifying a motivational trait that it is difficult to chart by using traditional ability measures. The concept of motivation is quite difficult to pin down and profession educators often turn their particular notions of motivation when explaining success of failure. Motivation has been characterized as a conceptual charlady widely used for sweeping up variance in academic attainment unaccounted for by traditional intellectual or educational variables.
IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY
Study skills are approaches and strategies we use in learning. These are the most important skills to get good grades. Honing our study skills not only help us succeed academically it will also help to do well in life. These skills can be usually be learned in a short time and applied to every grade level in every subject. We just have to be persistent at practicing and using these skills until they become second nature to us some of the benefits of improved study skills are reduced test anxiety, increased confidence, competence and self-esteem. We will realize their good grades are not always achieved through studying long hours. We can cut down on the number of hours, this study by study efficiency through knowing how to study. Once we learn these skills, we will be well on our way to becoming the successful student that we have always wanted to be.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
Ø  To access the study skills of the individual.
Ø  To getting on with the things pupils have got to do.
Ø  To build knowledge by acquiring facts and information.
Ø  To make sure pupil remember things well.
Ø  To make the pupil to use the information that they have acquired.
Ø  To understandnew materials for ourselves.
Ø  To see things in different and more meaningful way.
Ø  To use our all experiences in life.

DESCRIPTION OF MATERIALS
The questionnaire has 52 items on the aspects of study skills. It measures one’s organization of time, goal setting, ability to concentrate, learning methods and obstacles of effective study. It has been formulated in both English and Tamil. Reliability and validity have been established. Test Retest reliability based on a sample of five high school students drawn from Government East High School Muvattupuzha. The response to each statement is either Yes/No. This questionnaire can be administered in individual setting or group setting.

The individual’s total score may range from 0 to 53. The cut off score is 30 considered to have good study skills.
METHOD OF STUDY
The sample of the study consisted of five eighth standard students following Kerala State Syllabus in Government East High School Muvattupuzha. The tool used in the study was the Study Skill Questionnaire. The questionnaire containing 52 questions, which are categorized into four schedules. In study method, in classroom, homework and regarding examination. The questions touché all the aspects of a student’s various study habits.
The individual scores of each student and group score are tabulated in Table I and II

DISCUSSION OF RESULT
   Study skills inventory was a psychological response of the pupils. In the face of seemingly in surmountable pressure and frustrations parents and teachers are sometimes unable to guide their children or student effectively. This study was conducted among five students of standard VIII. The first and third students were showing good study skills. The other three did not possess a better study habit. Their performance in classroom, way of doing homework and classwork, preparations for attending examination etc. were the various aspects which measure the study skills. Law performance in any of this field will affect the achievement of the student.
CONCLUSION
     Study skills are approaches applied to learning. Study skill inventories have successfully identified a proclivity for academic achievement not accounted by ability.

     This study was helpful to identify the study habit of students. From this study it is clear that study habits and achievement level are directly proportional to each other. Through the test it is understood that the students have to follow many things for better studies.
